Fourier Transform Infrared (FT-IR) is an instrument for analyzing chemical composition of many organic compounds. Because each type of covalent bond has a specific absorption in the infrared, FT-IR is useful for identifying compounds and the quality or consistency of samples. The spectra of solid medical devices are recorded using attenuated total reflectance. Spectral analysis can include comparison between recorded spectrum and reference spectra of known compounds that are available in online reference-libraries databases. Such analysis confirms the identity of a medical device and its variance from other compounds.
